The Benefits of Microdermabrasion in Kelowna
September 30, 2023The Benefits of Microneedling in Kelowna
October 31, 2023We all have our reasons for getting a tattoo. Sometimes, it is in memory of a loved one; sometimes, it’s a reminder of our strength and resilience, and sometimes, we feel rebelliously unpredictable and don’t think it through entirely. Whatever the reason, perhaps at some point, you find yourself regretting your ink and wish you could get it erased. But surely a tattoo is forever, right? Wrong! At Zahra Salon and Medical Spa, we have the answer to help you get a tattoo removed, and it is indeed possible with the Picosure Machine.
What is the Picosure Machine?
Using ultra-short pulses of laser light, we can now target pigment in the skin faster and more efficiently than previous models. The laser technology is in a handheld piece with a microscopic lens that aims and distributes the correct number of pulses. The technician moves the laser slowly over the area being treated as it targets darker pigment embedded in the skin. It typically requires fewer treatments than other machines, and there is minimal discomfort or downtime. Whether you want to remove small or large tattoos, the Picosure machine is a powerful and completely customizable tool for your treatments.
How many sessions will it take?
We recommend 4-5 treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart for optimal results. Each session takes about 30 minutes. Depending on the depth or colour of the tattoo, it may take additional sessions. Some would compare the removal sensation to the pain of getting a tattoo, although no needles are used. As the laser pulses the tissue where pigment is present, it breaks up the ink into tiny particles so your body can naturally eliminate them. A topical numbing cream is typically applied before the treatment to mitigate pain.
How can I prepare for my appointment?
There are just a few things to remember when coming in for a tattoo removal.
- Avoid the use of any perfumes, lotions or cosmetics beforehand.
- Avoid using sunless tanning lotion, tanning beds or any sun exposure for 4 weeks before your treatment. For this reason, it may be preferable to do tattoo removal in the winter months.
- Avoid waxing for at least 2 weeks before your tattoo removal. You may safely shave the area to be treated beforehand.
- You must stop taking Accutane for at least 6 months before the treatment and remain off of it during the course of your treatments, as it will lead to skin sensitivity and increase the risk of complications.
What is the aftercare for a tattoo removal?
It is imperative to take home care seriously so that you get the best possible results. Clients usually see what looks like a “frosting” effect on the skin or a bit of swelling and redness. However, you must treat the area with care as it is healing to avoid scarring or infection. Once the area has been treated, you will be instructed to do the following:
- Clean the wound in the shower by letting the water run over the area and gently pat it dry.
- Apply Aquaphor to the area 2-3 times daily to keep it moist. Cover it with a non-stick Telfa gauze pad afterwards. Let the scab fall off on its own.
- Do NOT pick, scratch, scrub, peel or disturb the wound during the healing process in any way. Blisters and scabs can occur and are completely normal; however, do your best to leave it alone so that it can heal properly.
- Avoid pools, hot tubs and saunas during the healing process.
- Avoid excessive sweating for the first 2-7 days after treatment.
- Avoid sun exposure, or do not leave the house without applying a thick layer of SPF 30 or higher sunscreen on the area. Reapply every 2 hours if you will be outdoors.
My tattoo has colour – Can this be removed as well?
Depending on the colours in your tattoo, we may use a different wavelength to target the pigment. This means that you may have to come in for additional sessions to remove the colour as well as the black ink fully. The 755nm wavelength removes black, grey, blue and green ink well. The 532nm wavelength treats warmer tones, like red, orange and yellow, although these pigments can be more challenging to treat.
